Lecture “The Continuing Need for Useless Knowledge” of Prof. Martin Chalfie

On April 22, Nobel Prize Winner Professor Martin Chalfi of Columbia University (USA) held a lecture “The Continuing Need for Useless Knowledge” at our University. The famous scientist talked about how scientific discoveries are made, and how the philosophy of science is developing in the modern world.

Martin Chalfi received a prestigious award with a group of colleagues for discovering green fluorescent protein. “The appearance of a green fluorescent proteincan be compared to the appearance of an X-ray apparatus or a tomograph in medicine,” explained the importance of this discovery by Sergey Lukyanov, the rector of our University. - This tool allowed us to observe the processes that occur inside living cells. Now there is no laboratory in the world where this technology is not used. ”
