Personalized therapy for children: Pirogov University studied the influence of genetics on the effectiveness of treatment

Anastasia Buyanova, a junior researcher at the Laboratory of Clinical Genomics and Bioinformatics at the Veltischev Institute of Pirogov University, made a presentation at the X National Congress with International Participation "Healthy Children — the Future of the Country", which was held at the St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University.

The Congress brought together leading specialists in pediatrics, neonatology and pediatric medicine from Russia and abroad. The discussion focused on modern approaches to the treatment of children, the development of personalized medicine and improving the safety of drug therapy.

In her report, Anastasia Buyanova presented the results of the study "Retrospective analysis of pharmacotherapy in children using exomic sequencing data", performed by a team of authors.

The work is devoted to how data from genetic analysis can help doctors choose safer and more effective treatment for children.

The study was performed on the basis of data from 100 patients of Moscow children's hospitals who underwent exomic sequencing due to suspected rare hereditary diseases. Scientists have analyzed how the features of the genome affect children's reactions to various medications.

The main conclusion of the work is that the response to treatment in children can vary significantly, and some of the adverse reactions to medications are related to the genetic characteristics of patients. The study shows that severe side effects in a number of children, including allergic reactions and rare complications, can be predicted based on genetic markers.

Special attention is paid to the possibilities of exomic sequencing: the data obtained allows not only to clarify the diagnosis, but also to form recommendations on the choice and dosage of drugs for a particular patient.

The authors note that the use of genetic information in clinical practice can increase the safety of children's treatment and reduce the risk of complications, especially when prescribing antibacterial and other commonly used therapies.

Anastasia Buyanova's presentation became an example of the presentation of modern scientific approaches of Pirogov University in the field of personalized medicine at a major All-Russian scientific site.
