Leading experts from Pirogov University discussed the future of biomedical technologies at SPIEF 2026

The session "Biotechnologies in Medicine: a driver of bioeconomics and a vector of export development" was held at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026). The moderator was Veronika Skvortsova, Head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia (FMBA of Russia).

The session was attended by leading experts from Pirogov University: Sergey Lukyanov, PhD, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Rector of Pirogov University; Vladimir Chekhonin, MD, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Medical Nanobiotechnology at the Institute of Biomedicine (MBF); Musa Khaitov, MD, Head of the Department of Immunology at the Institute of Biomedicine (MBF), Director of the Institute of Immunology of the FMBA of Russia.

Veronika Skvortsova emphasized the special importance of a strategic approach to the development of the industry:

"Rapid scientific and technological development has led to the formation of new economic models. At the Future Technologies Forum, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin set the task of developing and implementing a strategy for the long-term development of the bioeconomy until 2036, which confirmed the role of the biotechnology sector as one of the key national priorities."

The participants discussed how modern biomedical technologies allow for a deeper understanding of the human body and open up new opportunities for treatment, diagnosis and vaccination. Special attention was paid to personalized medicine and platform solutions for the implementation of scientific developments in clinical practice.

It is this approach — from basic science to real solutions — that today defines the future of medical technologies and forms a new model for the development of healthcare and the economy.
