When knowledge works in practice: an internship for pediatricians was held at Pirogov University

Pirogov University has completed a full—time professional development cycle "Pediatrics: from genetics to emergency conditions", a program that brought together pediatricians from different regions of the country and gave them the opportunity to undergo intensive training at the University's clinical facilities.

Olga Prirodova, Vice-Rector for Postgraduate and Continuing Education at Pirogov University, Head of the Department of Professional Education and Educational Technologies at the Institute of Continuing Education and Professional Development (INOPR), PhD, delivered a welcoming speech at the opening. She noted the high level of organization of the award and emphasized the importance of this form of training for doctors who work with the most vulnerable patients — newborns and young children. It is this emphasis on professional support and exchange of experience that has become one of the important semantic lines of the entire program.

During the classes, the students discussed topics that modern pediatric follow-up is impossible without: federal clinical guidelines, continuity between a maternity hospital and a children's polyclinic, features of managing deeply premature infants, neonatal jaundice, congenital heart defects, respiratory infections, severe infections in frequently ill children, and algorithms for emergency care for fever, seizures, and poisoning.

The internship was attended by 16 pediatricians— winners of the national expert award "Doctor with a capital letter" from Tula, Novgorod regions and Krasnodar Territory. Their job is to help children on a daily basis, which means that special attention to the quality, accuracy of decisions and continuity of medical care is of fundamental importance here.

The staff of Pirogov University took part in the full-time professional development cycle. Speakers from the Department of Pediatrics and School Medicine of INOPR:

  • Dmitry Pankov, MD, Professor, Head of the Department, with a report "Socially significant consequences of traumatic brain injury in children and adolescents";
  • Elena Kovrigina, PhD, Associate Professor of the Department, with the topic "Federal clinical guidelines. How to read them to a practicing doctor."

From the Department of Neonatology of INOPR, the program was attended by:

  • Yulia Sigova, assistant Professor of the department, who presented the topics "Skin diseases in children of the first months of life in the practice of a pediatrician" and "Exchange of bilirubin and jaundice during the newborn period";
  • Vasilisa Avramenko, an assistant professor at the department, who spoke on the topic "Continuity of medical care for newborn children in the maternity hospital — children's polyclinic system."

Lyubov Kharitonova, MD, Professor, Head of the Department, delivered lectures from the Department of Pediatrics with Infectious Diseases in foreign Children. Her presentations were devoted to the topics "Acute respiratory viral infections in children" and "Rational pharmacotherapy of recurrent respiratory tract diseases in children."

The cycle program was designed to combine lecture preparation, seminar work and practical skills development.

The lectures were devoted to topics such as:

  • "Federal clinical guidelines as a tool for work at the outpatient stage of diagnosis and treatment";
  • "Continuity of medical care for newborn children in the maternity hospital — children's polyclinic system";
  • "Infections of the umbilical wound and umbilical vessels, skin and soft tissues in newborns and premature infants";
  • "General and specific laboratory differential diagnosis of respiratory infections";
  • "Severe infections in frequently ill children";
  • "Emergency condition: traumatic brain injury."

As part of the seminars and simulation trainings in the field of Neonatology and prematurity, the participants analyzed:

  • perinatal CNS lesions in children of different gestational age and outpatient monitoring tactics;
  • management of deeply premature babies: modern approaches;
  • congenital heart defects: what a pediatrician should know;
  • jaundice of newborns and premature infants: modern approaches.

A separate internship block — "Emergency Pediatrics and Infections" — was devoted to practical algorithms and clinical thinking. It includes:

  • algorithms for emergency care for fever, seizures, poisoning, as well as for endocrine, autoimmune and allergic diseases;
  • methods of early diagnosis of severe infectious diseases based on clinical examples and criteria of severity;
  • lysosomal storage diseases: when to suspect;
  • primary immunodeficiency in young children;
  • neuromuscular diseases: early signs;
  • differential diagnosis of hereditary and acquired hematological diseases.

Over the course of five days, participants attended lectures, seminars and simulation trainings, analyzed clinical cases and worked out algorithms for actions in difficult situations — from infections in newborns to emergency care for children with serious conditions.

The training took place at several bases at once: at the Children's City Polyclinic No. 150 of the Moscow Department of Health, at the Center for Modern Perinatal Technologies of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical Center of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, at the L.M. Roshal Children's Scientific and Clinical Center and at the Academician Yu.E. Veltischev Institute of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery of Pirogov University. This format allowed participants to see different levels of care and compare theory with actual clinical practice.

Pediatricians who studied at Pirogov University noted not only the richness of the program, but also its applied nature: the acquired knowledge can be immediately applied in daily work. And this, perhaps, is the main result of such a cycle — when learning does not end in the classroom, but turns into more accurate, confident and modern assistance to children.
