Pirogov University discussed how to overcome barriers in glaucoma treatment

The sixth teleconference of glaucomatology experts took place at Pirogov University - a joint meeting of the Expert Council on Glaucoma of the Russian Glaucoma Society, the International Expert Council of the CIS countries and the Scientific Avant—Garde group of young scientists (39th meeting). The Department of Ophthalmology named after Academician A.P. Nesterov of the Pirogov ICM University and the O.M. Filatov State Clinical Hospital No. 15 of the DZM participated in the organization and holding of the event. The discussion focused on the main barriers that support and reinforce "medical inertia" in the daily clinical practice of an ophthalmologist. The event was timed to coincide with Glaucoma Week.

 

Representatives of Pirogov University made welcoming and expert presentations:

  • President of the Russian Glaucoma Society, Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology named after Academician A.P. Nesterov of the Faculty of Medicine of Pirogov University, Doctor of Medicine, Professor Evgeny Egorov;
  • Head of the Department of Ophthalmology named after Academician A.P. Nesterov ICM Pirogov University, Head of the Ophthalmological Center (with a day hospital) Central Military Clinical Hospital named after P.V. Mandryk of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medicine, Associate Professor, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation Alexander Kuroedov;
  • Associate Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology named after Academician A.P. Nesterov, ICM of Pirogov University, Candidate of Medical Sciences Jamila Lovpache;
  • Dmitry Katz, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Russian Glaucoma Society.

 The discussion was also attended by:

The discussion focused on how to recognize risk factors in a timely manner, avoid early manifestations of the disease, and build more consistent patient management tactics. The participants emphasized that in glaucoma, it is especially important not to delay diagnosis and treatment: regular examinations and careful attention to the symptoms make it possible to slow down the progression of the disease and preserve vision for many years. This focus is fully consistent with the goal of World Glaucoma Week, which aims to raise awareness of the disease and prevent irreversible vision loss.
