Pirogov University and the Moscow City Branch of the Russian Red Cross have signed a cooperation agreement on the development of the Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors

The purpose of the agreement is to cooperate for the benefit of the development of the Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors in the Moscow region.

During the ceremony, the parties discussed a joint work plan, which includes:

  1. lectures and seminars on bone marrow donation;
  2. recruitment (attraction) of potential bone marrow donors by taking blood or buccal epithelium at regional events of the Moscow State University of the Russian Academy of Sciences (mass sports, educational and other events);
  3. professional development of volunteers of the Moscow State Educational Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other public associations and organizations in the field of popularization of bone marrow donation, etc.

"It is important for us not only to increase the number of the Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors, but to ensure high-quality recruitment and informed entry of donors into the Federal Register. Cooperation with the Moscow City Branch of the Russian Red Cross will expand the information system campaign on bone marrow donation among young people, train volunteers and, of course, include volunteers in the Federal Register," said Tigran Muradyan, Head of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry at Pirogov University.

"Cooperation with Pirogov University will allow us to scale the possibilities of recruiting potential bone marrow donors in the Moscow region, attracting to the Federal Register those who have not yet had the opportunity to join it, or those who did not have information about the possibility of becoming a bone marrow donor," said Zabil Alekperov, chairman of the Moscow City branch of the Russian Red Cross.

Denis Rebrikov, Vice-Rector for Research, drew attention to the technological capabilities of the Genomics Laboratory of the Pirogov University Research Institute of Translational Medicine, which is capable of HLA-typing more than 50,000 samples of biological material from potential bone marrow donors per year in high resolution.

Pirogov University is a full-service organization in the Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors: it performs not only donor recruitment, but also tissue typing in its own laboratory. The Pirogov University Procurement Center conducts a medical examination of the donor and harvesting of bone marrow (hematopoietic stem cells) when the HLA genotypes of the donor and recipient match, which helps to provide a cellular product to both the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital, a branch of Pirogov University, and leading federal centers, the R.M. Gorbacheva DOGiT Research Institute. I.P. Pavlov, the D. Rogachev National Research Medical Center, the N.N. Blokhin National Research Medical Center of Hematology, the N.N. Blokhin National Research Medical Center of Oncology, and others, as well as Moscow city hospitals — the Botkin Moscow Medical Center and the Morozovskaya State Clinical Hospital.

At Pirogov University, all stages of the donation process (HLA typing, medical examination of bone marrow donors, collection of bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cells) are carried out at the expense of the state budget, own or borrowed funds, eliminating the need for a patient (parent / legal representative), relatives or a transplant center to find funds.
