The psychological profile of a serial killer through the eyes of the "Faust of the 21st Century"

Pirogov University hosted a lecture from the Director of the Department of Clinical Psychology of the ICPSR, which forced a new look at the nature of evil. Vasily Beinarovich, a psychiatrist who hosts the true-crime podcast "Cases", talked about what the consciousness of a serial criminal hides.

Where does the path of a murderer begin? According to the expert, the key often lies in a distorted perception of reality. "A serial killer is a person who commits two or more murders, and we must consider this from the point of view of addiction,"Vasily Beinarovich is convinced. Their formation is influenced by a complex combination of biology, psychology, and the social environment.

The lecture became a journey through time: from the search for the mythical "stone of madness" in the skulls of the Middle Ages to absurd ideas like the "Resurrectionist" of 1953. The speaker paid special attention to the "dark triad" — narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. It is these traits that make criminals crave recognition, sometimes even writing to the police themselves.

The lecture ended on an optimistic note. "The world is changing,"Vasily Beinarovich noted. "DNA technologies, neural networks, surveillance cameras and the increasing availability of psychological assistance create an environment in which it is more difficult for a potential criminal to act."

The lively discussion that followed the presentation showed how important and in-demand this topic turned out to be for future doctors and scientists.

The meeting allowed us to look into the abyss of the human psyche through the eyes of a psychiatrist. You will be able to immerse yourself in this and other medical specialties at the festival "One Day at the University: Pirogov Fest" on November 22 —пирогов.фест!
