The operation required the highest precision, because the fetal heart was only 3.5×2 centimeters in size, and the diameter of the narrowed aortic valve was 1.8 millimeters. Under the ultrasound navigation of ultrasound diagnostics specialists O.Malmberg and O.Samsonova, obstetrician-gynecologist M. Shamanova inserted a needle into the fetal heart. Endovascular surgeons A.Grigoryan and B. Mkrtychyan inserted and inflated a special balloon, expanding the diameter of the valve opening. After successful surgery, fetal blood flow returned to normal, and pregnancy proceeded without complications. At the 38th week, the woman in labor underwent a cesarean section, and a healthy boy, Lev, was born.
Leva is two years old today, and he is growing up to be an active and happy child. There is nothing to remind him of the severe heart defect that threatened his life even before he was born. This case is a vivid example of how modern medical technologies and the well—coordinated work of a team of professionals can work wonders and give hope to families.
The team of specialists who participated in the rescue of Leva was awarded the highest professional award. Among them are:
