The Bone Marrow Donor Registry of N.I. Pirogov Russian National Research and Medical University has been cooperating with the Association of Cancer Patients “Hello!” since 2023. Irina Borovova, President of the Association, told the students about modern methods of cancer treatment and the fact that thanks to the development of medicine, many types of cancer can be successfully treated today.
Representatives of the Pirogov University Bone Marrow Donor Registry took part in the events: deputy head Ksenia Duzhina and coordinator Milana Butunts.
“One of the main problems in the development of the Federal Register is the low level of awareness of our citizens about bone marrow donation – about half of the population does not know about this opportunity. You should join the Federal Register only if you are sure that on the day when you receive a call that there is a recipient who needs your help, you will confidently answer: “Yes, I am ready”, – said Ksenia Duzhina.
Milana Butunts emphasized the importance of expanding the donor base: “Bone marrow donation is an opportunity to save patients' lives, and the wider the Federal Register of bone marrow donors is, the more chances recipients have. In our multinational country the genetic diversity of the Federal Register is also very important”.
As a result of the events, 31 people donated samples of biological material to join the Federal Register.
