The 60th donor: “You should not be afraid of far-fetched risks”

Recently, the 60th anniversary donation of hematopoietic stem cells took place at the Pirogov University Bone Marrow Donor Registry. The donor was ITMO graduate student Ekaterina Maghera.

Ekaterina is a regular blood donor, in March 2024 she joined the Federal Register at the BIOCAD donor event. The genotype match occurred a year later, and the girl immediately donated blood for confirmatory typing in the KDL laboratory.

“My parents were surprised at first: why would I do this? My mom read more about donation - and changed her mind. In the end, everyone supported me,” Ekaterina recalls.

Unpleasant symptoms during stimulation were within normal limits, and the girl continued to study and work. The apheresis procedure itself took 3.5 hours. Ekaterina noted the high level of professionalism of the specialists of the bone marrow transplantation department of RDKB – a branch of Pirogov University, who were by her side at all stages of donation.

“Many people are afraid of far-fetched risks, but are calm, for example, about smoking or fast food. Bone marrow donation is a long-studied, controlled procedure. Drugs for stimulation have been used since the end of the last century”, – the girl shares.

We thank Ekaterina for her willingness to help, it is a true demonstration of humanity, kindness and strength of spirit.
