The 51st bone marrow donor: “I wasn't scared, because I realized that someone on the other side was much more scared”

Recently, the 51st donation of hematopoietic stem cells took place in the Bone Marrow Donor Registry of Pirogov University. The donor was Anna Dedeshko.

Anna entered the Federal Register in 2023 by submitting an application on the portal of state services. The girl found information about bone marrow donation in social networks. The first genotype match occurred in the summer of 2024, but an alternative donor was chosen for donation. After that, Anna thought she would never get another call from the Registry, because genotype matches are very rare.

In January 2025, I received another call when we were on vacation as a family and was offered to be a donor. Can you imagine, I matched once again! So it was fate. My husband supported my decision, and my mom helped with the baby during the examination and stimulation before the donation,” Anna recalls.

The process of stimulation of hematopoietic cells into the bloodstream for the first two days was very well tolerated by the future donor. Then she developed pain in her spine. Most of all, the symptoms worried Anna's mother, but the girl reassured her that it was all for the sake of helping people.

The apheresis procedure itself was long, the surrender took two days. My hands hurt a lot, but the doctors and I did everything we could to dial the necessary number of hematopoietic cells. I was not scared during the donation, because I realized that someone on the other side is much more scared,” Anna shared.

We are very grateful to Anna, who gave hope and a chance for a new life to her recipient.
