Learning is learning, but the moral compass will not adjust itself

Pirogov University discussed how important it is not to forget about humanity when learning to treat. The conference “Bioethics in Medical Education: Problems and Prospects” gathered teachers from different parts of the country to talk about how to make humanitarian education in medicine not just a supplement, but an integral part of doctors' training. It was discussed how important it is for future doctors not only to know anatomy, but also to understand how to make complex moral decisions.

The conference participants were looking for answers to difficult questions: how to bring humanity back to medicine, how to teach students empathy and responsibility? Specific solutions were proposed: more humanities subjects in the first courses, mandatory ethics courses for practicing doctors, and even the creation of a scientific specialty “Biomedical ethics and medical law”. The idea is that doctors should not only treat diseases, but also understand the value of human life.

The moderator of the meeting was Dr. Elena Grebenshchikova, Ph.D., Director of the Institute of Humanitarian Sciences (IHS) and Head of the Department of Bioethics at IHS, who emphasized the importance of bioethics. Grebenshchikova, who emphasized that ethics committees should evaluate not only scientific research, but also real situations in medicine, so that every doctor could make the right choice. The conference showed that the future of medicine is not only new technologies, but also a strong moral foundation that will help doctors to remain human in the most difficult situations.
