How to defeat cancer in newborns: the second lecture on the problems of perinatology and pediatrics was held at Pirogov University

The speaker was Svetlana Varfolomeeva, a practicing physician, director of the Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology of the N.N. Blokhin National Research Medical Center of Oncology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and a graduate of Pirogov University (Faculty of Pediatrics, 1996).

During the lecture, Svetlana Varfolomeeva noted the novelty of the topic under consideration and at the same time its importance and complexity. According to her, the problems of diagnosis and treatment of malignant neoplasms in newborns and young children are closely related to the peculiarities of the structure and maturation of the child's body.

A distinctive feature of such patients is their high sensitivity to toxic drugs and complex treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as well as the fact that lymphocytes used in immunotherapy quickly exhaust their capabilities, which limits the effectiveness of cell therapy in children.

Therefore, the most effective treatment method here is combination therapy, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Special attention should be paid to training doctors and nurses, as well as raising public awareness about the symptoms and prevention of cancer in children.

At the end of the meeting, the experts noted the need to increase the effectiveness of cancer therapy in children, which requires not only developing new diagnostic and treatment methods, increasing the availability of the latest drugs and technologies, but also strengthening cooperation between specialists of different profiles.
