Health fragrance: medicine and perfumery

An open lecture "Medicine and perfumery" was held at Pirogov University.: so much in common!" The speaker was Evgeny Taratukhin— a medical anthropologist, researcher of olfaction and head of the Department of Medical Law, Ethics and Anthropology at the Pirogov University Medical Institute.

Evgeny Olegovich spoke about the history of perfumery and its connection with medicine. Initially, colognes were based on natural substances, but then people learned to synthesize fragrant molecules that do not exist in nature, capable of influencing emotions and behavior.

Modern technologies make it possible to create "molecular spirits". Some of these compounds affect not only the sense of smell, but also the functioning of the body, which brings perfumery closer to pharmacy. Research confirms that aromatherapy can alleviate the symptoms of stress and anxiety. However, there are risks: some ingredients can cause allergies, skin reactions, and systemic toxicity, which is why they are excluded from use.

To restore sensitivity to odors, it is important to train your sense of smell regularly with simple exercises. Getting to know new scented substances allows you to expand your senses and even stimulate the growth of new receptors that were not previously active.

Thus, the perfume industry is increasingly relying on chemistry and physiology, and medicine is actively studying aromapsychological approaches and the effect of aromas and scented substances on the body. Both fields interact by investigating disease markers and the effects of synthetic compounds, which highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary approach.
