"I learned about bone marrow donation from my friend Ksenia Dyuzhina. I joined the Register and even forgot about it. And then I started seeing posts about donors and thought, “This is so cool. I want to do that too," recalls Laura.
A couple of years after joining the Registry, Laura was contacted and informed that her stem cells were needed by a person in need.
"First, I donated blood for confirmatory typing, I waited a month. Then I got an email saying I wasn't suitable. Of course, I was upset. And a month later, the confirmation came. I was glad because I was really looking forward to this day. As soon as I found out, I called my mom. She burst into tears of happiness, was very proud of me, and supported me all the time, albeit from a distance. The groom also helped. He was with me during the donation, accompanied me all the time, said that I could do everything. Although I was very afraid, it was this moral support that helped me move on," the girl says.
Laura admits that the procedure was not easy for her, but the Registry staff were in touch around the clock, and the doctors of the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital, a branch of Pirogov University, constantly monitored her condition and helped in every possible way.
"There is pain, but it is temporary. One week for someone to have a chance at life is not much. I just did my best, and that's enough. Although, of course, I imagined that my donor had a family and children. And I was very pleased to realize that I could give him a chance at life," she says.
Laura completed her studies at Pirogov University this year. Now she is going to connect her life with pediatrics or pediatric neurology, and we wish her good luck and thank Laura for her courage and responsibility!
We remind you that at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital, a branch of Pirogov University, regular donors of blood and components, as well as hospital staff and students, can join the Federal Register. It is necessary to inform the transfusiologist about the admission during the medical examination. For more information, follow the link.
