Maxim started donating blood while he was still a student, and the idea to join the Federal Register of bone marrow donors arose at one of the donor events at the University. “At that time I knew almost nothing about bone marrow donation, but everything was explained to me in detail. When they said the chance of a match was small, I thought, 'What if I am the one who can help someone?” – he recalls.
And this “suddenly” happened! An unexpected call from a specialist of the Registry informed us that Maxim's genotype matched the genotype of a patient in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. My first reaction was skepticism, even the thought of a prank, but a check of the number confirmed the seriousness of the situation. Realization and consent to donate blood for confirmatory typing followed.
At work, Maxim shared the news of the match and it turned out that one of his supervisors was also on the Registry, which added to his confidence and support. “My confidence was shaken a bit by the information that the doctors chose exfusion as the method of donation. I know from my work that it can be unpleasant and somewhat painful. But I couldn't refuse. If you take a step, you go all the way,” Maxim admits. He knows that his recipient is a small person weighing less than 30 kilograms, but it doesn't matter to him whether it's a child or an adult. “Everyone has the right to live his life,” the donor is convinced.
We express our huge gratitude to Maxim for his fortitude, sense of responsibility and incredible readiness to come to the rescue!
